Existential Ceramics

Buianova Andriana about ceramics and personality

About the Author... or From the Author

Hello! My name is Adriana Buianova, and I am an existential psychoanalyst and ceramicist.
My project, Existential Ceramics, is a philosophical and aesthetic exploration of humanity, freedom, and the development of an authorial stance, embodied in the creation of ceramic vases.

I have always been fascinated by the human being and human life. For over 15 years, my academic practice in psychology and philosophy (psychoanalysis, phenomenology, ontological hermeneutics) has been dedicated to seeking an answer to the question, "Who is the human being?" I have a particular interest in working with creativity and ceramics.

Within the framework of my project, I collaborate with incredible creative individuals. Together, we explore the process of developing an authorial stance and expressing oneself in the world through creativity and art.

Today, in my work, I feel free, yet I remain demanding of myself.
I find joy not only in creating a vase but also in the encounter with those who view it or create their own picture of life through it. It’s truly amazing!

My vases, as a metaphor for the soul, reflect the simultaneous integrity of a person and his "being in a gap", the ability to experience the unbearable.
In my works, I invite the observer to dialogue, to the free flow of his associations to reveal the ability to understand himself and the other.

"Binary opposition and the pursuit of freedom"
The 2025 collection is a continuation of my exploration of the nature of human freedom in the world and my own thinking that limits it.
Binary opposition is a way of perceiving the world through opposites: good and bad, love and rejection, victory and defeat. A person strives to put himself in this frame, as such opposites create the illusion of order, and can relieve tension caused by misunderstanding.
But this is just a simulation of freedom, which forces us to constantly fight for recognition, to prove that we are "good enough."
Throughout the work on the collection, I was accompanied by the ideas of Jean-Paul Sartre and Martin Heidegger.
Sartre said: "Even in the most restrictive conditions, a person always has the freedom to choose whether to obey or resist, to change their attitude to what is happening."
Heidegger, on the other hand, saw freedom not as a struggle and liberation from, but as "freedom For the Sake of": the path to authentic life and the search for meaning, which requires the courage to go beyond the usual framework.

I am inspired to create dishes by my family, and the culture of Asia, its traditions, and philosophy. The life of a person in a circle of loved ones, movement, interaction, and the passage of time are what my dishes should support, preserve, and protect.
